Brother and sister drown in East Slovak flood

Floods in Eastern Slovakia claimed two lives, Ján Zelonka of the local Firefighting and Rescue Corps told the TASR on July 23. One man was pulled into a raging stream in the village of Čirč (Prešov region). His sister was caught in the in the stream while she trying to rescue him. Both siblings drowned.

Zelonka added that the most serious floods are in the Čirč district.

A state of emergency has been also declared in the High Tatras where incessant rain accompanied by strong winds have broken branches and uprooted trees along roads and railway tracks from Studený Potok to Tatranská Lomnica. "We decided to declare a state of emergency in order to prevent any possible further threat to the lives, health, and property of the citizens and visitors to the High Tatras," crisis staff secretary and the chief of town police Miroslav Kolodzej told the TASR.
