The preparatory committee for the unveiling ceremony of the statue of St. Stephen in Komárno in southern Slovakia accepts full responsibility for selecting August 21 as the date for organizing its event, which caused a wave of outrage among Slovak political leaders because of the planned unofficial visit of Hungarian President László Sólyom, the SITA newswire wrote.
“It is our fault,” said the chairman of the committee and Komárno mayor Tibor Bastrnák (MOST-HID) to SITA. He said that there were several factors that influenced the selection of that date. One is that the sculptor stated the date when the statue would be finished with the precision of one day, August 20. That is why the committee decided to stage the unveiling ceremony on Friday, August 21 and distributed invitations to guests. One of the guests who accepted the invitation was Hungarian President László Sólyom, said Bastrnák. SITA
