Slovak transport minister offers more concessions to hauliers in e-toll dispute

Protesting Slovak hauliers are continuing to insist on their two main short-term demands regarding Slovakia’s new electronic highway toll collection system: that they pay tolls only for kilometres driven and not for the entire tolled stretches; and that a majority of first category roads are omitted from the toll system.

Jaroslav Polaček, a member of the preparatory committee of the Union of Slovak Motor Carriers, told the SITA newswire after a meeting of hauliers in Zvolen on Monday, January 18, that his organisation would provide further details in a statement to the media, including the haulier’s long-term demands and the actions they plan to take if that their demands are ignored.

Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny said he believes he has found a way to meet hauliers’ demand that they pay the e-toll on first category roads only for the kilometres they actually drive, SITA wrote. The newswire reported that he decided at negotiations on Tuesday that if a truck does not use the whole measured section and exits it, the toll will not be charged for that road section. As of February, vehicles should pay a toll on 1,006 modified sections of first-category roads and, as of April, on 1,700 sections of charged highways, dual-carriageways and first-category roads.

According to Vážny, this constitutes the maximum possible compromise towards hauliers. By February 1, when trucks over 3.5 tonnes will again pay to use tolled first-category roads, the Transport Ministry will prepare two phases of an operational solution with the deadline being the end of March.
